RELIEF EFFORTS ON THE BAHAMAS EXPANDING

The Salvation Army is partnering with the Bahamian Government to get
more disaster relief workers to affected areas

Nassau, The Bahamas

The Salvation Army has been working closely with the Bahamian government to get experienced disaster relief personnel from within the organisation into the areas affected so that the relief efforts can be expanded to help with the growing need, including emotional and spiritual care.  More and more evacuees are needing assistance in Nassau and people have started to get back into their homes in Grand Bahamas and The Salvation Army is providing much-needed supplies and support.

As of Saturday, September 14 The Salvation Army Bahamas hurricane response team has distributed 150 pallets of relief goods (water, food, hygiene supplies, baby items) and in Freeport 2,032 individuals have been served (food parcels and clothing).  These persons include 489 families, 1216 adults, and 816 children.  In Nassau 57 families comprised of 228 individuals have been served food parcels and clothing).  The Salvation Army in Nassau is also sheltering 43 evacuees and provided them with cooked meals on a daily basis.  The Salvation Army has also distributed 326 hygiene kits and numerous pallets of food and water supplies to non-TSA shelter evacuees.

Major Ingram continues to express his appreciation of the close partnership forged between the Bahamian government and The Salvation Army saying, “The Government of The Bahamas, from the very start, has been very supportive of all The Salvation Army relief efforts including expediting the process for personnel & supplies to enter the Bahamas.  We have never experienced undue delays in receiving these permissions as the process is very transparent and approvals are granted quickly.  The Salvation Army is working closely with NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) to ensure that relief supplies reach those in need as quickly as possible.”

The Salvation Army attends all relevant coordination meetings facilitated by NEMA of the Bahamas and its partners and all relief and recovery efforts are in coordination with the strategic plan of the Bahamian Government.

The Salvation Army has had a strong presence in the Bahamas, over ninety years in Nassau and over thirty years in Freeport, and will be involved not only in the immediate response but also in the long term rebuilding efforts.  We foresee these efforts being in the 3-5 year in duration … if not longer.
