RELIEF CONSTANT AS NEEDS CHANGE

The Salvation Army is partnering with NEMA and other agencies to get
help where it is needed as it is needed

Nassau, The Bahamas

The Salvation Army continues to be “a cup of cool water” in meeting the needs of evacuees and persons beginning to rebuild their lives as they return home.  Even as the needs and responses shift, The Salvation Army, in partnership with NEMA and other relief agencies, continues to assess and evaluate where they can continue to help best.

As of Sunday, September 29 The Salvation Army Bahamas hurricane response team has distributed 510 pallets of relief goods (water, food, hygiene supplies, baby items).  In Freeport, 5,688 individuals have been served with food parcels, water, and nearly 5000 articles of clothing.  In Nassau 473 individuals have been served food parcels and clothing.  The shelters have begun closing as persons have moved out to return to their home islands or to find more permanent housing.  The Salvation Army in Nassau closed its temporary emergency shelter but is still sheltering 7 evacuees at its permanent Grants Town shelter and continues to provide them with cooked meals on a daily basis.  The Salvation Army has also distributed over 1,400 hot meals, 1.747 clothing articles, 197 food parcels 149 cases of water and 403 hygiene kits to non-TSA shelter evacuees.  There have been numerous trips to Abaco to distribute relief commodities throughout the island.  A plan is being formulated for more regular engagement on Abaco  with more consistent partners that can help with large scale distribution effectively in impacted communities.

The Salvation Army attends all relevant coordination meetings facilitated by NEMA of the Bahamas and its partners and all relief and recovery efforts are in coordination with the strategic plan of the Bahamian Government.

The Salvation Army has had a strong presence in the Bahamas, over ninety years in Nassau and over thirty years in Freeport, and will be involved not only in the immediate response but also in the long term rebuilding efforts.  We foresee these efforts being in the 3-5 year in duration … if not longer.
